Join the celebration and grand opening of the Environmental Learning Center

Check out the new building for Science and Math Institute students, zoo staff and community programs at an open house and celebration in Point Defiance Park.  You can:

  • Take a student-led tour of the building
  • Participate in fun, educational hands-on activities for all ages
  • Get free general admission to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Fort Nisqually Living History Museum (for Tacoma residents with ID)

Start with a short program in the Environmental Learning Center at 11 a.m. where you'll hear about the partnership between Tacoma Public Schools and Metro Parks Tacoma that led to the creation of the new building. Then, take a tour around the building from SAMi students, see the work they’ve been creating and learn more about what Point Defiance has to offer.

The Environmental Learning Center is one of 14 schools being built, remodeled or replaced thanks to a $500 million bond issue voters approved in 2013. Thank you, Tacoma voters!
